Is a tablet right for your practice?
I wrote a column a few weeks ago questioning whether a tablet computer might be in your future. Although the Apple Macintosh is still an excellent, if pricey, choice, the iPad2 was key to making Apple the largest corporation in the world — for a few minutes, at least, the other day, beating out Exxon Mobil in terms of market capitalization (the market price of outstanding corporate stock multiplied by the number of shares). For a couple of years the Windows laptop — with two or four gigabytes of RAM and a 200-gigabyte or more hard drive, well discounted to under $500, has been our recommendation of the appropriate computer for the lawyer.
But the times they are a changin’. And there are other things to consider these days.
Look around and you’ll find a number of other tablet computers out there, most of them using an advanced version of Google’s Android operating system. The Hewlett-Packard tablet, which uses a version of the Web OS that HP apparently had in mind when it bought the carcass of Palm, has been out for several weeks and is already on sale for a manufacturer discounted price of 20 percent off. The Apple version has a 10-inch touch screen and 16 to 64 gigabytes of built-in memory for $500 to $700 for a WiFi only version, with about $130 more if you would like 3G cellular capability. (You pay extra for the cellular data transfer, although you don’t have to sign up for a contract.) Other tablets, from Motorola, Samsung and others, might be smaller — down to 7-inch screens — but typically use the same touch screen Internet model. (As far as I know none of the tablets use removable SD cards for memory; it would be nice if the base tablet came with a 16 GB card, with a second card port that could boost memory to 64 when the price of memory comes down, but it is obviously more profitable for the manufacturers to sell RAM themselves.)
